What’s Happening with Law School Admissions This Year?

Every admissions cycle feels intense when you are inside it. But some years are objectively harder than others, regardless of how calm or anxious applicants feel. The February 2026 LSAC Current Volume Summary makes clear that this is not just a tougher year than last year—it is dramatically tougher than the last two.

As compared to one year ago, current year applicants are up 20.4 percent, and compared to two years ago, they are up 42.7 percent. Applications are even starker: up 23.1 percent from last year, and 51.6 percent from two years ago. In plain terms, admissions offices are processing more than half again as many applications as they were two years ago.

These are not incremental shifts; they are market-changing numbers. The gap between applicants and applications tells us that the average applicant is applying to more schools, compounding pressure everywhere and increasing yield risk for schools.

Timing Now Does Real Work

Much of the applicant pool becomes visible early. By mid-cycle, LSAC often captures nearly two-thirds of the final applicant count. Admissions offices are not guessing about what might be coming later; they already have a clear sense of the shape of the cycle.

Compared to last year, one out of every five applicants is new. This level of growth changes institutional behavior. Schools can afford to wait, compare, and protect yield aggressively, which applicants often experience as silence, delay, or ambiguity.
