★ Quick Take / Executive Summary

College Solutions' proprietary new scholarship tool helps students find merit aid opportunities that align with their unique qualifications and interests

In addition to her work helping hundreds of students apply for scholarship funding, CEO Margaret Bolton Baudinet has served on the selection committees for both the Coca-Cola Scholarship Program and the University of Virginia’s prestigious Jefferson Scholarship, giving her firsthand insight into what makes scholarship candidates stand out.

In today’s post, Margaret shares more about a proprietary research tool we’ve built for College Solutions scholarship clients to help them find and pursue meaningful merit aid opportunities.

A Smarter Approach to the Scholarship Search

The process begins with information about the student. Students provide details such as their geographic location, academic qualifications, interests, activities, and any specialized circumstances. The database then uses that information to cull through hundreds of scholarships and generate a personalized list of results, helping students quickly identify opportunities that are relevant to them.

This individualized approach is important because scholarships aren't just awarded for academic achievement. There are opportunities connected to a student's intended major, career interests, community involvement, talents, ancestry, geographic location, and countless other factors. A student may qualify for opportunities simply because of something unique about their background or interests that would never appear in a generic scholarship search.

Looking Beyond What Qualifies Today

One of my favorite features of this resource is that it doesn't only show students scholarships for which they currently qualify: It also identifies opportunities that may become available with a relatively small amount of additional effort.

For example, a student might discover that raising their GPA slightly, improving a standardized test score, completing additional community service hours, or meeting another relatively attainable requirement could open the door to additional scholarship opportunities. That's valuable information at the start of senior year. Instead of discovering an opportunity after the deadline—or realizing too late that a student was just short of an eligibility requirement—we can help families identify those possibilities early enough to do something about them.

Search Results Are Just the Beginning

A list of scholarships isn't particularly useful if a student doesn't know what to do with it. That's where College Solutions’ experts come in. Once the personalized results are generated, our team uploads them directly to the student's profile in our college planning portal.

This is an important distinction between finding scholarships and developing a scholarship strategy. Students have limited time, particularly during senior year. Applying indiscriminately to every scholarship they can find isn't necessarily the best use of that time. We want students to focus their energy on opportunities where they have a realistic chance of being competitive.

For students who decide to pursue a scholarship opportunity, our support doesn't stop with the search. For scholarship clients, expert Writing Coach assistance is included for up to three drafts of each scholarship essay. That means students have access to guidance not only in identifying opportunities, but also in developing thoughtful, compelling responses that reflect who they are and why they are deserving of the award. A strong scholarship application isn't simply about checking every box. It should give the reader a reason to remember the student.

A Competitive Advantage for Merit Aid & How We Help

I believe one of the biggest advantages of this resource is the combination of technology and expertise. The database makes it possible to efficiently identify opportunities that might otherwise be difficult to find. Our team then brings the human judgment needed to evaluate those opportunities, prioritize them, and determine how they fit into the student's broader college and financial strategy. For families pursuing merit aid, that combination can make a meaningful difference. And perhaps most importantly, it gives students a place to start. The scholarship process can feel like one more enormous task on an already overwhelming senior-year checklist. Our goal is to make it more focused, personalized, and strategic—so students aren't simply searching for scholarships. They're pursuing the right scholarships for them.

Our proprietary scholarship search tool is included in select College Solutions advising packages and is also available as an Enrichment for seniors whose advising package doesn’t already include scholarship support. Additional support is also available for students applying to high-level scholarships such as the Elks Scholarship, Emory Scholars Program, NC State’s Park Scholarship, UVA’s Jefferson Scholarship, UNC’s Morehead-Cain Scholarship, W&L’s Johnson Scholarship, Duke’s Robertson Scholarship, and the Coca-Cola Scholarship. If you're looking for ways to make college more affordable, or simply want to make sure your student isn't overlooking opportunities for merit aid, we'd be happy to tell you more about how this resource works and whether it may be a good fit for your family. The right scholarship can make a difference. Finding it shouldn't have to be a full-time job.
