STUDENT STORY: A Big Secret

The College Solutions Team recently caught up with College Solutions rising senior Owen to talk about his internship this summer at Big Secret, a company that makes keepsakes out of wood, glass, plastic, metal, and acrylic materials.

In general, how was the internship experience?

It was a fun experience and gave me a lot of insight into new things.

You like to draw and you like building things. Was Big Secret a good fit for you?

Big Secret was definitely a good fit for me.

Tell us what your days were like working at Big Secret.

I would arrive at 10 and work until the mid-afternoon (usually leaving around 3:30 on a normal day). We would multi-task and work on many different projects throughout the day and always would have a fun time doing it.

What did you learn?

I learned how different speeds and powers can affect engraving, I learned about the ins and outs of shipping products, and I learned how to actually use the lasers.

What are you most proud of with the internship?

I am most proud of my work on a light we built. I was asked to design a light pattern that gave off a vintage look and my design was chosen for the final product.

What do you think, from what you witnessed, are the keys to running a successful business?

Being on task, being able to handle difficult and different situations, knowing your clients well, and building good relationships with others.

Can you see doing something like this as a career?

Yeah, definitely. My dream is to have my own business one day and this gave me a great look inside the running of a successful business.
